The Department of Civil Engineering, VAST TC Kilimanoor, organized an industrial visit on 7.2.2026 for S4, S6, and S8 students to Aruvikkara Dam and Water Treatment Plant and Napier Museum, Thiruvananthapuram.
The visit aimed to enhance students’ practical understanding of Civil Engineering concepts related to Water Resources, Environmental Engineering, Hydraulic Structures, Construction Technology, and Architectural Heritage.
The visit to Aruvikkara Dam and Water Treatment Plant provided students with valuable exposure to the functioning of a major water supply system. Officials briefed the students on the role of the dam in meeting the potable water requirements of Thiruvananthapuram city. Students observed the structural components and layout of the dam, water storage and regulation mechanisms, raw water intake systems, and various treatment processes including coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. They also gained insight into the distribution network and public water
supply management. The visit reinforced theoretical concepts from Water Supply Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Hydraulic Structures. After completing the site visit, students had lunch at a nearby restaurant before proceeding to the Napier Museum.
The visit to Napier Museum offered exposure to architectural heritage and traditional construction practices. Students observed the Indo-Saracenic architectural style, passive cooling techniques suitable for tropical climates, traditional craftsmanship, and the use of indigenous and sustainable building materials. They also learned about structural aesthetics, architectural planning, and heritage conservation techniques. This visit supported learning in subjects such as Building Materials, Construction Technology, Architecture, and Heritage Conservation. The faculty members in charge of the visit were Ms. Adheena V.S., IV Coordinator and Assistant Professor; Mr. Lenin Babu, Assistant Professor; Ms. Midhila M, Assistant Professor; and Ms. Rini Madhvan Rajeev, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, VAST Technical Campus, Kilimanoor. The industrial visit was successfully conducted and proved to be academically enriching and informative. It achieved its objectives by providing meaningful practical exposure and strengthening students’ understanding of core civil engineering concepts, thereby contributing to the development of industry-ready engineering graduates.
